THE BEATLES IN AUSTRALIA
JUST ANOTHER AUSTRALIAN’S BLOG ABOUT THE LEGEND ROCK BAND
THE BEATLES TOUR IN AUSTRALIA
The Beatles Tour in Australia was about fifty years ago. This 1964 tour was the first and the last for the Beatles. It was such a big surprise at that time for the most popular band in the world to have a concert in Australia. The Melbourne promoter Kenn Brodziak only said that it was the luck and instinct.
In 1963 the Beatles was on the top of its fame with the single “Please Please Me” that had been at the top of the UK chart for thirty weeks. Their second album in November 1963 was sold five hundred thousand copies.
So, when Kenn Brodziak came to London the same year, he undoubtedly chose the Beatles to be invited to Australia.
At first, Adelaide was not on the list to have the Beatles concert but the Beatles’ eighty thousand fans wrote a petition to the Beatles management directly.
When additional shows were added in Adelaide, about three hundred of the Beatles’ fans greeted the band showing their gratitude. After its show in Ed Sullivan Show USA in the early of 1964, with its four thousand fans screaming when they landed in JFK Airport, on June 11, 1964, the Beatles landed in Sydney Australia with Jimmy Nicol as the replacer of Ringo Starr who suffered from tonsillitis.
If the show happens today, I might take a rideshare service in Australia to go to the concert. I can't imagine how difficult it is to park my car among thousands of people who come to the show.
THE BEATLES TOUR IN NEW ZEALAND
The Beatles tour in New Zealand was in 1964. When they landed in mid-winter, about seven thousand people of Wellington were crowded in Rongotai Airport to greet the fabulous four.
They spent eight days in New Zealand and stayed at St George Hotel. In 1955 Nat King Cole came to have a concert visited by five thousand people.
The famous rock and roll stars such as Johnny Cash, Gene Vincent, and Johnnie Ray had their tour concert there as well.
A package tour of Dusty Springfields, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Gene Pitney, Brian Poole and the Tremelos had been done just weeks before the Beatles came to New Zealand.
In Australia, fans had to go camping to get tickets and New Zealanders were in the queue to have the ticket.
With the wet and cold conditions with hundreds of people behind, each fan patiently bought the ticket.
Even with limited radio air time, the fame of the Beatles spread so quickly in New Zealand. The fans of the Beatles with famous songs “Please Please Me”, “Can’t Buy Me Love”, “You Can’t do that”, “All My Loving”, etc, were so ready to enjoy the live performance of the Beatles.
WHY THE BEATLES SO POPULAR IN AUSTRALIA
Who doesn’t know the Beatles, one of the most famous English rock bands, that was formed in 1960? The band has been so popular until now. Many of today’s bands and singers are influenced by the Beatles and its members. Do you know why the Beatles is very popular?
The Beatles invented a new music style. They wrote and performed their own works. The Beatles has been the standard for new bands until now. Since the mid of the 1960s, many successful bands have owed their success to the band. If you want to build a band which is internationally famous, you should make and perform your own music works or you won’t have record contracts.
The Beatles tried to grow all the time. In the first place, the band was just a rock and roll band citing the Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly’s influences, playing Chuck Berry’s, and making compositions for girls. However, in their second album—the Rubber Soul—they began to play their own original work.
The Revolver album that was launched in 1966 was like a storm. It was a great innovation. There were many impacts on people and musicians after the Beatles launched its Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. No music works made by famous musicians and singers could compete with the Beatles’ works at that time. The Beatles continued its innovation on the Magical Mystery Tour, Abbey Road, Let It Be, and Yellow Submarine albums.
The Beatles came with long hair, cute accents, and great songs such as “I Want to Hold Your Hands”, “Please, Please, Please, Me”, “She Loves You”, etc. Many music lovers think that the Beatles is the most recognizable band in the world. Many people, especially who lived in the 1960s, said that when they listened to the Beatles’ music for the very first time, it was like they had never heard any music before.
Now you know why the Beatles has been so popular until now. The band has influenced many music people and bands to have original works to show to people.
